Project Type
UI Case Study
Duration
Fall 2019 (3 months)
Role
Research, ideating, and prototypes
Skills
Wireframing, Prototyping, Personas, Sketching, Competitive Analysis
OBJECTIVE
How to redesign a website for a record label?
The current Atlantic Records website content has very large elements and holds extra pages that aren’t necessary to the brand making the site look cluttered. The objective is to redesign Atlantic Records’ website to visually less complicated and more intuitive and simple to use.
DESIGN PROCESS
Iterate for real needs
Atlantic Records redesign was a solo project that took half of the semester. I conducted the research and design process, from looking at their competitors to validating design decisions. My design evolved along several rounds of iteration at different stages.
RESEARCH
Who are the competitors?
COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
I took a careful look at existing record labels to analyze their pros and cons in respect to supporting my target activity. I analyzed multiple existing record labels such as Rhino, End Records, and Epitaph.
Rhino is Atlantic Records’s top competitor. Rhino has 301 fewer employees vs. Atlantic Records.
End Records has been one of Atlantic Records’s top competitors. End Records generates 1.41% the revenue of Atlantic Records.
Epitaph is perceived as one of Atlantic Records’s biggest rivals. Epitaph generates $678.3M less revenue than Atlantic Records.
PERSONA
Understanding the users
I created a Persona to represent a user who faces an issue as an aspiring music artist. This gave me a clear picture of the user’s expectations and how they would like to use the product.
IDEATION
Style Tiles
Based on my research I was able to create two different style tiles for the site. The first one has a white minimalist look sticking with the already existing site. The second style tile was inspired by Spotify and Apple Music where it has a dark interface with pops of color.
FLOW DIAGRAM
Site Map
To create this sitemap, I referred to the layout of the Atlantic Records site to reorganize and make a few changes in order to simplify the pages. There were some pages that I felt was unnecessary to have so I removed them.
WIREFRAMING
Determine interaction flow
After creating the sitemap above, I was able to transfer that into mid-fidelity wireframes for 8 of those pages. These designs are inspired by Spotify and Apple Music as well as the Atlantic Records site.
UI DESIGN
Atoms, Molecules, & Organisms
The next step was to build the atoms of the page. Using our style tiles as guides, we did this by creating the simplest building blocks including labels, input fields, buttons, links, etc.
UI DESIGN
Final solution
Using the style guide above, I was able to redesign the Atlantic Records website.
CONCLUSION
Next steps
The next steps upon completion would be focused on user testing and redesigning until final production.
